Generating more leads does not always mean spending a lot more money.
Of course, money helps, but I’ve seen plenty of business blast thousands on paid ads every month, without getting that return on investment they deserve.
What really threads the needle is understanding where your target audience are, what problems they’re typically experiencing, and how you can fix them. Finding out this information takes time, research, and trial and error.
You might have a website, social media accounts and a database of old contacts. You may even be getting regular website visitors.
But if those people are not turning into enquiries, simply spending more on ads can become an expensive way to avoid fixing the real problem.
Here are some practical, tried and tested ways to generate more leads without spending thousands on advertising.
1. Make it easier for people to find you on Google
If someone is already searching for the service you provide, this is a great opportunity.
This is why Search Engine Optimisiation (SEO) for small businesses can be so effective.
Start with the basics:
- Make sure each important service has its own clear website page: Ensure relevant keywords are targeted, and the page is focused on fixing the individuals specific problems.
- Use the words your customers actually search for: For example, if you’re a massage parlour, ‘affordable massage london’, ‘relieve back pain’ ‘deep tissue massage near me’ could all be relevant search terms you’d like to rank highly for on Google to secure more customers.
- Keep your Google Business Profile updated: Ensure customers know where you are, respond to relevant reviews and feedback, and list your services there too. Share new updates and promotions about your business so viewers are kept interested.
- Collect genuine customer reviews: Word of mouth spreads fast, and positive reviews directly improve your search performance, if possible, create an automation at the end of a service booking, or have a QR code setup in your offices to make the process easy for customers to perform.
- Make sure your location and contact details are easy to find: Reducing friction is vital to increasing leads and sales. We all want solutions to our problems, and quickly.
You do not need thousands of website visitors.
A local business would usually benefit far more from 100 relevant visitors looking for exactly what it offers than 5,000 visitors who are unlikely to buy.
2. Improve the website traffic you already have
Before investing heavily in bringing more people to your website, ask a more important question:
What happens when someone gets there?
A potential customer should quickly understand what you offer, who it is for and what they should do next.
If your website is confusing, poorly designed, outdated or hard to navigate, increasing traffic will not solve the problem.
Look at your key pages and ask:
Is it obvious how somebody becomes a customer?
Sometimes a clearer headline, stronger call-to-action or simpler contact form can make a noticeable difference to lead generation without increasing your advertising spend at all. You should also be in contact with leads and customers promptly and ask if their problems are being dealt with. We want solutions to our problems, and fast, and poorly designed websites will be a bottleneck to your business growth.
3. Stop treating social media as a noticeboard
Social media can generate leads, but only when the content gives people a reason to pay attention.
Constantly posting things like:
“Check out our latest service.”
“Contact us today.”
“We’re here to help.”
is unlikely to build much interest.
Instead, create content around the problems your customers actually experience. What are their pain points, and what are your solution to these pain points?
For example, rather than a massage company posting:
“We offer massage services .”
it could explain:
“Why do so many desk workers experience tension headaches, and how can massage therapy help?”
That content demonstrates expertise while helping someone with a real problem.
When they eventually need help, your business is far more likely to come to mind.
An additonal tip is to not spread yourselves too thin. For example, a massage clinic could get deep on a few specific pain points for a few different ideal customer profiles. For example, For corporate professionals, it could be that massage therapy provides a remedy to: tension headaches, chronic stress, and lower back pain, from frequent sitting. The goal is to become the go-to massage clinic for corporate professionals with these problems.
4. Use the customers and contacts you already have
Businesses often spend a lot of time trying to find completely new audiences while forgetting about people who already know them.
Your existing database could include:
- Previous customers
- Old enquiries
- Newsletter subscribers
- People who downloaded something from your website
- Prospects who were interested but were not ready to buy
These people are usually much easier to reach than complete strangers.
A useful email, new service announcement or simple follow-up campaign can sometimes create opportunities from contacts sitting unnoticed in your CRM. For example, old enquiries could be notified about a new promotion for deep tissue massage services at your clinic. In previous times, they may have been concerned about costs, but now they’re feeling confident to try your services, especially if there’s a 20% discount involved.
Before you decide to go with a big budget paid ads campaign, ask yourself “Have I optimised the use of my current database yet?”
5. Give people a reason to contact you
“Get in touch” is not always enough.
Think about what useful first step you could offer someone.
Depending on the business, this might be:
- A free consultation
- A heavily discounted price for the first order
- A quote
- A free website review/audit
- A downloadable guide
- A free assessment
- A short discovery call
A potential customer might not be ready to buy immediately, but they may be willing to start a conversation.
That conversation is the lead.
6. Follow up properly
Our final way to generate more leads without spending thousands on advertising is simply following up in the right way. This is one of the simplest ways to increase leads without increasing your marketing budget.
Not every person who enquires will buy immediately.
People get busy.
They compare options.
They forget to reply.
They may decide to revisit the problem next month.
Your entire follow-up process shouldn’t just be one email or one phone call, good opportunities can disappear surprisingly quickly.
Simple email automations (say, with 5 or so e-mails), which triggers after they contact, or a basic CRM process can help you follow up consistently without constantly remembering to do it manually. There are lots of great tools for this, such as ActiveCampaign or HubSpot.
It can be tough ensuring enquiries come in in the first place. Make sure you give it every reasonable chance to become a customer.
You don’t need the biggest marketing budget
Large companies can afford to spend heavily on advertising.
Most small businesses cannot, and they do not necessarily need to.
What really matters is understanding your customer, appearing in the right places, making it easy to take the next step and learning from what produces results.
Get the foundations in place, and once you’re securing a solid return on investment, then you can move on to the bigger things.
